The name Fryer’s Cove originates from the
real Fryer’s Cove at Strandfontein which was named after Richard
Fryer, a British settler from Irish ancestry who was the first commercial
farmer in the area.
Jan (Ponk) van Zyl is in charge of the day to day management of
the vineyards and the business. At present the vineyard consists
of 1 ha Pinot Noir, 1 ha Merlot and 4 ha Sauvignon Blanc. From the
very beginning the vineyard performed well in the cool climate and
adequate sunshine. This results in a long and drawn out ripening
period which provides outstanding flavour components in the grapes
and eventually in the wine sugar and acidity ratio, as well as pH
analysis is exceptional.
Wynand Hamman is responsible for the making of the wine and has
done it up to now at a winery in the Boland. As from 2005 the wine
is made at Knorhoek near Stellenbosch where Fryer’s Cove has
acquired a share in the winery.
The wines are of unique character and is marketed under the Fryer’s
Cove trademark and Wine of origin Bamboesbay. Presently it is the
only vineyard in that ward. The public voted the Fryer’s Cove
Sauvignon Blanc into the first place as a South African Sauvignon
Blanc at the Sauvignon Blanc Celebration in 2003.
In 2005 the Fryer's Cove Bamboesbay Sauvignon Blanc was awarded
5 stars in Wine Magazine. It was only the second Sauvignon Blanc
in 12 years to achieve this. |
